Suntech Power has completed grid connection of the first 10MW utility-scale solar power project in China, located in Shizuishan, Ningxia Autonomous Region. The project involves a 10MW ground mount solar system and is the first phase of a 50MW solar plant that is targeted to be completed by 2011 with China Energy Conservation Investment Corporation (CECIC), a Suntech partner.

Earlier this month, the two main bodies in the Italian renewable energy world, Gruppo Imprese Fotovoltaiche Italiane (GIFI), the Italian Photovoltaic Association, and Federazione Nazionale Imprese Elettrotecniche ed Elettroniche (ANIE), proposed a new set of Feed in Tariffs (FiT) for Italy, which are planned for 2011, according to a Barclays Solar report.

The Government of Ontario, Canada, announced back in March plans for renewable energy, and in particular a feed-in tariff (FiT) for the region. These plans have now been finalized, as the government announces that it will proceed as planned. Astronergy Solar has invested €1 million to establish a German branch of the company: Astronergy Solar Deutschland. The European branch will be located in Munich and will be responsible for market development, technical support, customer service and logistics.

Since 2005, SolarWorld has been awarding the SolarWorld Einstein-Award to individuals of outstanding merit who have contributed in a special way to the use of solar energy. The award was born from the explanation of the photoelectric effect by Albert Einstein who laid the foundation for understanding PV solar energy. This year's award goes to Dr. Rupert Neudeck, the founder of "Cap Anamour" and the head of the aid organization "Grünhelme" (green helmets).

Many industries worldwide are paying more attention to their energy supply, moving slowly but surely down renewable avenues. One industry some may be surprised to find investing in the green energy sector is the multi-billion sports industry. Over the last couple of months, more and more sports companies have announced the use of renewable, and in particular solar PV, installations. Among the most recent to announce these initiatives are the UK's Sheffield Wednesday, Barcelona's RCD Espanyol football club and Italy's Bentegodi Stadium in Verona.

India is the latest country to release details on its solar plans, involving rebates, incentives and tariffs. The country hopes that the Indian state of Gujarat will become a hub for solar power. The National Solar Mission aims for 100GW of renewable power by 2030 and 200GW by 2050.
