Cuba has 22MW of installed solar capacity at present across 14 individual plants. There are plans for deploying 700MW of solar PV by 2030, which would account for 24% of the country’s electricity production.

Jorge Barredo, president of UNEF, said: “Such partnerships are essential to promote the development of the Spanish photovoltaic sector both within and outside our borders.”

He added that sharing experience and know-how is key to boosting business opportunities and the expansion of the PV sector.

Cubasolar president Luis Bérriz Pérez said: “Right now, when the energy policy of our country is based on energy efficiency and use of renewable energy sources, an alliance with the Union Spanish Photovoltaic is strategic for achieving sustainable development.”

In June UK developer Hive Energy said it will develop a 50MW installation – Cuba's first utility-scale project

Meanwhile, Spain is considering a 3GW renewable energy auction including solar PV, however, the policy is uncertain while the country awaits the formation of a government.
